Ashlyn M.

write.design.repeat.

I'm Ashlyn. Welcome to my portfolio & my "niche" - the place where you can check out all of my passions, projects, skills and stories.

I'm a student, freelance writer, amateur graphic designer, SPFX makeup lover, costume assistant & stitcher, novelist and scriptwriter.

I love writing & creating art. Since I'm passionate about quite a few career paths and not quite sure where I'll end up, I've collected a variety of skills in graphic design, new media, writing, stitching, draping, patterning, wardrobe (dressing), styling and hair & makeup.

I  offer freelance graphic design and writing. Most of my stories (and now, a script!) are available on Wattpad, an online writing platform.

Smoke in the Night (Fall 2017)

A student journalist goes undercover to investigate allegations against a fraternity president - but with dangerous consequences.

I was the costume designer and hair & makeup designer for the film.

Touch-ups behind the scenes.

Mood boards for Christina, the main character.

Described as strong but damaged, vulnerable, wears clothing as a protective armor. Since the character's personal hero is Amelia Earhart, echoed throughout the film, the director wanted her costume to echo a flight suit.  We ended up going with a long, streamlined red jacket with a fur color, to mimic flight jackets of old, and a structured black sleeveless jumpsuit.

Her second look - seen only in the final scene - was simpler, representing that her guard is down, and while she has quite succeeded, she has survived. We kept it clean by layering a jacket and flannel over a tee and jeans, and cut costs by using the same boots as seen in outfit one.

Mood boards for Nick, Christina's friend and a member of the fraternity.

At the start of the film, Nick has already been on the "outs" with his fraternity, and doesn't quite have a place there anymore. His jacket continuities the theme of "flight," and his blues and blacks contribute to an overall sense of melancholy and despair.

At the end, he too is simpler, subdued by the ordeal both characters went through. He wears soft knit and a sweatshirt, more grays mixed in.

Mood board for David, president of the fraternity.

The original plan was for David to wear all black with a touch of red, as a traditional villain. However, the scene he first appears in takes place at night, during a college party. I wanted him to stand in sharp contrast to everyone around him - almost "glow" - and to look a cut above the rest.

We chose to outfit him in all white (+ khaki) and kept his overall outfit structured to give off an air of wealth.

Mood board for Frankie, fraternity member.

Since he's described as the "life of the party," I thought it appropriate to give Frankie a bright, bold color. We ended up going with a tongue-in-cheek "Noir" sweatshirt as a nod to the film's aesthetic inspiration, and again kept his outfit structured yet slightly more relaxed.
